Just popping in to say a quick hello and share a few thoughts that have been on my mind lately.
If you spend enough time in the aesthetics industry, you see it all. You see the miracle ingredients, the viral trends, and the elaborate 12-step routines that promise you the moon, the stars, and poreless glass skin. But when you step back from the noise, skincare is a deeply personal journey. It is a daily ritual that requires patience, observation, and a whole lot of common sense.
I was looking at my own bathroom cabinet recently and reflecting on how my personal approach to skin health has evolved over the years. We spend so much time talking about specific treatments and products, but today, I want to pull back the curtain on my actual philosophy. These are the rules I live by, the lessons I have learned, and the boundaries I set for my own face.
As we chat through these reflections, I want you to think about your own daily routine. What habits are serving you well, and what might need a little adjusting?
Experimenting with Skincare (or Not)
Let me let you in on a little secret: I have absolutely everything under the sun in my personal skincare collection. From top notch serums to highly potent active ingredients, my cabinets are fully stocked. Yet, despite having access to an endless supply of products, I very rarely experiment with my daily routine.
When I decide to introduce a new product, I am incredibly strict about it. I add a maximum of one or two new things at a time. Why? Because if you overhaul your entire routine in a single weekend and suddenly break out, you have absolutely no idea which product is the culprit. Your face becomes a crime scene with no clear suspect.
However, avoiding wild experimentation does not mean my routine is rigid or boring. Your skin is a highly dynamic organ. It shifts and changes based on your environment, your hormones, and your lifestyle. For example, when my stress levels spike, my skin immediately responds by producing more oil and a dull rough texture. That is exactly when I need to pivot and pull out the big guns.
The goal is to maintain a steady, reliable baseline while having the knowledge and the tools to treat specific flare-ups when they happen. You do not need to constantly shock your skin with new products; you just need to know how to listen to it.
Science Over Sensation
We all love a luxurious skincare experience. A beautiful scent and a silky texture can make your nighttime routine feel like a high end spa visit. But when it comes down to brass tacks, I focus first and foremost on what actually improves the structural appearance of my skin, and much less on what simply "feels good."
In fact, some of the most effective, transformative skincare ingredients on the market do not smell great or feel particularly elegant upon application. But they deliver undeniable, cellular-level results. As a professional, brands are constantly pitching their newest launches to me. My immediate, non-negotiable first question is always: What does the science say?
Show me the clinical trials...third party testing. Show me the molecular breakdown. Show me exactly how this active ingredient communicates with the cells. If a product relies entirely on slick marketing and pretty packaging rather than proven science, it does not make the cut.
This strict filter is also why I am hella hesitant to jump on trendy skincare bandwagons. Social media is brilliant at convincing us that we urgently need the latest bizarre ingredient or viral tool. But trends fade, while the laws of skin anatomy remain exactly the same. I will always choose a scientifically proven, clinically backed formulation over whatever is currently trending on the internet.
The Future of Skincare is Integrative
If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post, it is this: the future of skincare is undeniably integrative.
For decades, we treated skin as if it was merely a wrapper on the outside of the body, completely disconnected from what was happening on the inside. That could not be further from the truth. Your skin is a brilliant, highly communicative monitor for your internal health.
In my practice, I see so much underlying metabolic dysfunction. Honestly, I can often spot it a mile away just by looking at the way a patient's skin behaves. When I see chronic, fiery inflammation, severe dehydration, or stubborn pigmentation that refuses to budge, my inner skin detective immediately kicks in. It makes me wonder: what is really going on beneath the surface?
Are you dealing with chronic stress spiking your cortisol? Is your gut microbiome out of balance? Are you lacking essential fatty acids in your diet? You cannot out-skincare a poor internal environment. Topicals are incredibly powerful, but true, lasting skin health requires us to address the body as a whole. Healing your skin from the inside out is not just a holistic buzzword; it is the absolute foundation of modern aesthetic medicine.
Back to Basics
With all the scientific advancements and endless product options available, it is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed. Decision fatigue is real, and it often leads to a compromised skin barrier because we simply do too much.
Whenever you feel lost, or whenever your skin starts throwing a tantrum and acting highly reactive, you must go back to the basics. Strip the complicated steps away and return to the holy trinity of skin health:
- A gentle cleanser to remove daily debris without stripping your natural lipids.
- A supportive moisturizer to repair your barrier and lock in hydration.
- A daily broad-spectrum SPF to protect your cells from aggressive UV damage.
That is it. You can build the most beautiful, resilient complexion on earth with just those three foundational pillars.
This brings me to my final golden rule: quality skincare formulas will always trump quantity. You do not need a twenty-step routine to achieve glowing skin. You just need a handful of meticulously formulated, highly effective products that respect your skin's natural architecture. Invest in the best formulations you can access, use them consistently, and let them do their job.
What’s Working for You?
Now that I have shared the philosophies I live by, I would love to hear about your journey. Skincare is a deeply personal conversation, and we all learn so much from each other's experiences.
Take a moment to reflect on your current bathroom lineup. Are you sticking to the basics, or do you have a bad habit of buying every trendy serum that crosses your feed?
