SEPHORA PICKS FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN (AND A LITTLE GLOSS)

I recently ran a poll on my Instagram, and an overwhelming number of you said you would love for me to start sharing my favorite products. So, here we are! I am finally spilling the details on what is currently sitting in my makeup bag.

But before we dive into the fun stuff, let us be completely real for a second. Skincare—and yes, even makeup—is never a one-size-fits-all situation. The way I use and recommend products is not universal law. What works absolute miracles for my face might act completely differently on yours. If you are not getting personalized, one-on-one recommendations from a professional, the best way to know if something is right for you is simply to try it out and watch how your skin responds.

A Little About Me (and My Past Life)

You already know I am a credentialed skin professional who loves geeking out over barrier repair and cellular turnover. But here is a fun fact you might not know: before my deep dive into clinical skin health, I was a professional makeup artist.

I spent years working closely with brands, agencies, and television networks, freelancing for a massive range of projects. My specific niche was never today’s heavy, trendy, "baking and contouring" glam. I was always focused on creating flawless, realistic complexions. Working intimately with thousands of faces is actually what led me to skin in the first place. I quickly realized that the best makeup in the world cannot hide a struggling skin barrier.

Why Personalized Recommendations Matter

Treating skincare and makeup like a universal checklist is a recipe for disaster. Finding the right routine is exactly like dating—what works perfectly for one person might be a total, absolute mismatch for another. Just because a foundation goes viral online does not mean it belongs anywhere near your face.

Your skin has its own unique pH, oil production levels, and specific triggers. When dealing with acne-prone skin, the margin for error is even smaller. A product that gives someone else a "dewy glow" might just feed the bacteria trapped in your pores. This is why I constantly encourage you to experiment carefully and listen to your skin. If a highly-rated concealer makes you break out, do not force the relationship. Break up with it and move on.

Current Sephora Favorites for Breakout-Prone Skin

That being said, there are definitely formulas out there that play much nicer with reactive skin than others. Here are a few absolute gems I am currently loving from Sephora. These are generally fantastic for acne-prone skin, delivering beautiful coverage without causing absolute chaos beneath the surface.

Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Line

If you deal with excess oil and texture, the Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder and the Lift & Flex Concealer are phenomenal. The balm powder uses specific technology to balance sebum throughout the day without stripping the skin of moisture. It essentially blurs out the rough texture left behind by breakouts while keeping your barrier happy.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy SPF 30

Heavy, full-coverage matte foundations can often make acne look crusty and more pronounced. I love this tinted moisturizer because it gives a gorgeous, natural, skin-like finish while providing essential hydration. Plus, it sneaks in that broad-spectrum SPF 30, which is critical when you are trying to fade post-acne dark spots.

Pat McGrath Labs Sublime Perfection Concealer & Divine Bronzer

When you have an active breakout, you want a concealer that covers the redness without suffocating the pore. The Sublime Perfection Concealer is incredibly lightweight and flexible, meaning it moves with your skin instead of cracking over a blemish. I love pairing it with a light dusting of the Divine Bronzer to bring warmth back to the face without causing congestion along the cheeks.

Ami Colé Skin-Enhancing Stick

For a quick, breathable, "my skin but better" look, this stick is fantastic. It melts right into the face. The clean formula skips the heavy, pore-clogging waxes you often find in traditional stick foundations, making it a much safer bet for easily congested skin.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm & Ami Colé Lip Treatment Oil

We cannot talk about an acne-focused haul without throwing a little gloss into the mix for balance. If you are currently on Accutane, or using heavy retinoids to clear your skin, your lips are likely fighting for their absolute lives right now.

The Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm (Mint and Brown Sugar are my current go-to shades) and the Ami Colé Lip Treatment Oils are incredible for saving parched, peeling lips. They deliver a beautiful, glossy finish while actually treating the delicate skin barrier of your mouth. I did this review prior to the news of closure, so I hope you all were able to get in where you fit in and ration whats left! Those lip oils were divine!

Navigating the beauty aisle with acne-prone skin can feel incredibly intimidating, but it does not have to be a miserable experience. Enjoy the process of discovery, patch-test your new finds, and never be afraid to pivot if a product does not serve your skin’s health. Makeup should always enhance your natural architecture, not sabotage your clinical progress.

If you are tired of guessing which formulas will trigger a breakout and want to stop wasting money on products that simply do not work for your unique anatomy, it is time to get strategic. Book a consultation with our clinic today, and let us build a fully customized, one-on-one skin and product regimen designed exclusively for you.
