HAIR EXTENTIONS AND SCALP OR SKIN IRRITATION?

For many of us, hair is more than just hair. It's identity, culture, creativity, and expression. Switching up your hairstyle with wigs, extensions, or protective styles is a fun and empowering part of our self-care routine. But one thing we don’t always talk about is how these hair changes can impact our skin.

As a skin specialist, I’ve seen firsthand how many women experience unexplained breakouts, rashes, or irritation around the hairline, temples, cheeks, or forehead shortly after trying a new hairstyle or product. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and it might be more than just "sensitive skin."

What’s Really Going On? Meet Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction that happens when your skin comes into contact with something irritating or allergenic. This can happen with the materials used in wigs, hair extensions, adhesives, or even certain shampoos and conditioners. Common symptoms include:

  • Itching or burning sensation

  • Redness or rash

  • Bumps or flaking around the perimeter of the face

  • Dry, irritated patches along the forehead, temples, and cheeks

In fact, a patient may come in with concerns about acne or hyperpigmentation that we’ve made progress with, but after a hairstyle change, they experience a setback. Without seeing this patient directly, a pattern I often see involves improvement in skin clarity, followed by a flare-up of what turns out to be contact dermatitis. The key is identifying the trigger.

Why Hair Choices Can Trigger Skin Issues

Here are a few reasons your hairstyle could be affecting your skin:

  1. Synthetic Hair or Wig Materials: These can contain chemicals or fibers that irritate the skin.

  2. Glues and Adhesives: Often used to secure wigs or extensions, these can cause allergic reactions or clog pores.

  3. Fragranced Products: Strong scents in shampoos, edge controls, or conditioners may trigger skin irritation.

  4. Sweat and Build-Up: When styles are tight or worn long-term, sweat and product residue can build up around the hairline, contributing to inflammation.

Tips to Protect Your Skin While Keeping Your Style

  • Go Hypoallergenic: Look for wigs and extensions made from natural or hypoallergenic materials.

  • Clean the Perimeter: Gently cleanse the hairline and surrounding skin daily, especially when wearing tight or long-term styles.

  • Use Gentle Products: Choose sulfate-free, fragrance-free shampoos and avoid heavy oils or pore-clogging products.

  • Patch Test: Always test new adhesives or hair products on a small area before full use.

  • Give Your Skin a Break: If possible, let your skin breathe between styles. Use barrier creams if needed to reduce friction or contact.

Your hair is a form of expression, but it’s important to remember that your skin plays a role in the process too. If you’re experiencing recurring breakouts or irritation along your hairline, it may be time to take a closer look at what’s coming into contact with your skin. Balance is key, and you deserve to feel confident in your look and your skin. Pay attention to the signs, make a few intentional switches, and your glow-up will be both flawless and skin-friendly.
